“On my own I will just create, and if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, I’ll create something else. I don’t have any limitations on what I think I could do or be.” — Oprah Winfrey
I stumbled upon this quote by my fellow Mississippi native, Oprah, and I have never read anything that has described me so perfectly. Often, especially after having Ella, I get asked, “What is it that you actually do..?”. I know people are just being curious and I want to give them a professional response, but honestly half the time I don’t even know! Which starts this whole spiral of self doubt and insecurities… “People don’t think I have a real job. I should get a more stable career. What am I doing with my life!?!”
Someone once told me “A successful billionaire has at least 7 forms of revenue”. Now, I don’t know how true that actually is but it makes complete business sense to me! Every business has its high season and down season. A smart business owner would create a way to supplement their income during the slower season. This is exactly how my hobby of “Collecting Careers” began!
Growing up I always had a love for events and an obsession with all things Disney. So in college I not only interned with a few event planners but also participated in a merchandising internship at Walt Disney World! The Disney College program opened up so many doors for me, including me meeting my now husband and moving to Michigan! Upon leaving I signed up to become a Travel Planner using my knowledge to help families plan magical Disney vacations! It has been a wonderful career path for me but I still didn’t feel “Complete”…
The travel industry has a “wave” season that is opposite of wedding season so I continued to search for a career that also incorporated my love for events. On my journey I worked in a Bridal Boutique, as a Sales Manager at a Micheal Kors location, assistant to the owner of an event rental company, as well as worked on helping my husbands business with social media and community events. (I’m sure I forgot to list something..) All of this made me realize is that there isn’t ONE perfect career for me. If I wanted it, I needed to create it.
In Fall of 2015 I launched Shelbi Britton Travel & Event Planning. I started out focusing on Wedding Day of Coordination and booked 8 weddings right away! A few months into my first year I found out I was pregnant with Ella James. By the end of that season my ankles were permanently swollen, I was exhausted, and knew I was yet again going to need to alter my career to fit my needs.
In order to have the “Work from home” lifestyle I was going to need to create a career that didn’t demand me to commit to 15 hour days 6 months in advance, because we all know life with a baby is beyond unpredictable and I have no way of knowing what state my family will be in tomorrow much less months from now!
So I started focusing on my travel planning career. I watched webinars, attended online training classes, conference calls with resort sales managers, read dozens of travel blogs, joined referral groups and started marketing my self for Destination Weddings, Honeymoons, and family vacation planning!
The side of my that is constantly hungry to create still loves to organize styled wedding and fashion shoots, create videos for our family Disney vlog, sales rep for that magic lipstick called LipSense, and attend creative workshops and networking events like it’s my job! Recently I launched a site for creatives where they can sign up to explore, learn, and create together in a tropical island environment! Can you see now why my husband thinks I’m crazy…?) Oh, and I recently start playing around with the idea of styling Birthday Parties and small events… (Don’t look at me like that.)
I love to be busy. I love to create. I love to learn new things! It’s an obsession there seems to be no cure for.
When people ask me “What is it you do exactly..?” what am I going to say??
I still have no idea! haha I’m a mom, an entrepreneur, a travel and sparkle obsessed creative. Could explain why I became obsessed with the Hashtag “#Mompreneur”. That seems like a much more fun description of my lifestyle these days!
So am I the only one that is in the hobby of collecting careers out there? What words do you use to describe your self?! Comment below, make me feel less crazy!
Whether you are entrepreneur/Mompreneur), 9 to 5 kinda gal, or still searching for that perfect career, just continue to sparkle on and live your dream!
